Is this suitable for travel photography?

This is a definite "yes" for travel photography. The tripod is lightweight and folds into a rather compact form. It comes with a carry bag that has both handles and a shoulder strap. Easy to find a place to stow it in a car trunk or SUV rear compartment or a suitcase, if flying. Despite the compact size, it easily holds a DSLR (Canon 90D) securely.

Can the knob that controls the pan be swapped out for a long handle? Have arthritis in the hands.

I have to do this as well. So you could retrofit a longer piece will attach to the knob.

Allen key yes. Backup screws unfortunately no.

I just got this tripod, and there seems to be a lot of "play" or wobble in the ball head. Am I missing some way to tighten this up?

Yes You need to tight the right screw for tightening of ball
